Hello? Wrong Number.

What do you do if you make a phone call to a number that does not belong to the intended person, ie. a wrong number? Do you apologise then find a way to check the validity of the phone number? Or do you keep calling the same wrong number persistantly, hoping that eventually the right person would answer the call?

Some people are just real strange - they chose the latter option.

Katherine got six consecutive calls from a caller who was looking for Muragum. The caller even rudely demanded to know who Kat was and why she had answered the call. The caller persisted with repeated calls despite Kat telling the caller that he had got the wrong number. Irritated by the stubborn caller, Kat used a strong Indian accent and asked the caller, "I no Muragum. You vant to yorder prata or nasi briyani?"

After the sixth call, Kat refused to answer the calls, and the caller left messages on her voicemail! Tsk! Talk about persistency, dude!

Couple of years back, my cellphone used to be plagued with calls looking for a particular Azman. I think this Azman guy made lots of people angry cos they always sound very fierce and impatient.

Anyway, there was this woman who made several calls to me looking for Azman. She refused to believe me when I told her that she had called a wrong number and continued with more calls. Finally, she scolded me, "It is not the wrong number. He gave me this number so it can't be wrong. You should have said 'No such person' and not lead me on!"

Whaaaaaaat? I was so angry but equally amused at the woman's riduculous accusation, so I chose to just laugh about it.

Erronous phone calls also brings to mind how Dad would always mischeviously say, "So-and-so, not in" whenever he picks up a call looking for someone that does not exist at home.

Once, a man called our home by mistake looking for "Alice" and Dad told him that Alice wasn't in. The man frantically questioned Dad, "Who are you? What are you doing in my house? Where is Alice?!" Alas, Dad hung up without clarifying the situation.

Whoever Alice was, I hope she did not get into trouble. :)
