Brunch on the island

"How would you like to have brunch and some champagne at Il Lido today?" the husband chirped, as he roused me from slumber.

The mention of Il Lido spirited away all the sleepiness in me. The restaurant at Sentosa had many diners singing its praises for quite some time now, but I've never been there.

"For real? All the way into the island for brunch?" I asked.

"Yes! Let's have a great meal before coming back to spring clean the house!" he exclaimed happily.

Ahh, see - there's no free meal in this world.

Still, my little girlie heart fluttered at the thought of going on a date with the husband. I couldn't wait to take in the view of the sea, sip bubblies and engage the husband in conversation using whatever that's left of my raspy voice.

Alas, brunch at Il Lido hardly got me cheering.

Brunch started off on a hopeful note. The antipasti, comprising wonderfully-baked salmon, foie gras, mozzarella chunks drizzled with virgin olive oil and sprinkled with pepper, fried calamari, and parma ham.

But things went downhill from there.

Lobster pasta and black truffle risotto were disappointing. I know the Italians take great pride in serving up their carbs al dente. To me, there is a fine line between firm and hard. This dish was full of hard pasta and rice grains. I left much of it untouched.

Then came the meats. Wagyu beef cheeks, lamb and prawns.

I love red meats, but beef and lamb in a single sitting were just too harsh on my tummy. Even the perpetually ravenous husband had difficulty finishing his meal.

Dessert was also more of an eye-pleaser than anything else.

Ah heck it. At least the champagne was good. Then again, at S$25 a flute, that champagne had to be good.

I won't be coming back to Il Lido anytime soon for brunch. I'm far happier digging into good old French toasts, eggs and Belinis at Epicurious.
